We are in full on event mode this week and Gemma Ray is one of our speakers in the ‘Reasons & Results‘ virtual summit. This podcast interview about her book Self Discipline was originally published in December 2018, and is too good to loose in the archives, so here it is again for your enjoyment.
Gemma Ray
My guest on today’s show is Gemma Ray. She is a lifelong performer and creative writer who has been writing since she was 7 years old. Her career path took her from Civil Service to Radio, starting as ‘The Traffic Tart.
Yes, you did read that correctly. Gemma’s words, not mine. Apparently that was the job title on her contract!
Gemma’s current business role is Communications Coach, as she supports clients to communicate on all levels and through any medium. She draws on her past experience as a radio presenter, vocalist, actress, public speaker and event host. Gemma transfers these skills to clients through media coaching. She works with a number of business owners, influencers and career climbers to increase confidence and improve storytelling.
As ever we are here to talk of the person and not the career, but as Gemma has just become a published author for the first time this is a story worth sharing.
Becoming A Published Author
Although Gemma’s life looked good on the outside it was not working on the inside. The road to self-discovery and a reconciliation with herself lead to a breakdown. In the process of recovery, the idea and possibility of writing a book was born. It sat in her mind for quite a while before anything actually hit the page and would not have seen the light of day without a friend pushing her. ”Do it now” she was told and within the space of one hour it was mapped out and the first chapter written.
This interview is the real story behind the book, what it feels like to publish and promote your own work. “Running naked with no knickers and unshaven legs” apparently, or at least that is how it was for Gemma as she freely explains in the podcast.
Gemma’s book, Self Discipline is a ‘how-to’ guide to stop procrastinating and achieve your goals in 10 steps. It addresses the big issues around getting stuff done. We touch on some of the tools and tricks in our conversation.
We also talk about mental health, the wellness spiral and all of my usual questions about life, passion, success and purpose. Gemma is a natural speaker so this is a fun lively journey about real life living in a caravan.
I hope you enjoy this candid conversation with Gemma Ray.
There is a Kindle offer on Self Discipline until 13th December.
